Telenet Japan’s Valis series finally reached its fourth numbered entry on the Super Famicom with Super Valis IV, subtitled in Japan as Red Moon Rising Maiden. While the franchise earned its reputation as a pioneer of the "cinematic" platformer on the PC Engine CD-ROM², this cartridge-based conversion attempts to distill that epic scope into the constraints of the SNES hardware. Players step into the boots of Lena, the chosen successor to the legendary warrior Yuko, who must wield the Valis sword to thwart the resurrection of the demonic King Galgear. Unlike the original CD version which allowed players to swap between three distinct characters, this version focuses entirely on Lena, turning the experience into a more straightforward, traditional action-platformer.
The gameplay is responsive and leans heavily into the agile movement of its protagonist, featuring a useful slide maneuver and a magic system fueled by collected items. While the level design is competent, it suffers from the removal of several stages and mechanics found in the PC Engine original, making the SNES port feel more like a "remix" than a direct translation. The difficulty curve is generally fair, though some of the boss encounters rely on pattern memorization and twitch reflexes that may catch modern players off guard. Despite these cuts, the game remains a polished example of the genre, offering a satisfying flow of combat and exploration that highlights the strengths of the Super Famicom's processor.
Visually, the title is a treat, making excellent use of the console’s color palette to deliver vibrant, anime-inspired environments and detailed character sprites. The soundtrack, while naturally lacking the orchestral breadth of the CD version, still delivers a high-energy synth-rock score that pushes the SNES sound chip to its limits. It is an interesting artifact of the 16-bit era—a solid, well-crafted action game that stands as a testament to the series' popularity, even if it remains somewhat in the shadow of its more expansive disc-based sibling.
