Released by the prolific Taiwanese developer Gamtec in the early 1990s, *Zhuo Guǐ Dà Shi: Ghost Hunter* is a fascinating, if unpolished, relic of the unlicensed Mega Drive scene. Eschewing the typical side-scrolling action favored by many bootleg developers, this title opts for a top-down, grid-based puzzle-action hybrid that feels like a cross between *Pengo* and *Bomberman*. Players take control of a Taoist priest tasked with clearing screens of various spirits by pushing magical blocks to crush them, all while navigating increasingly claustrophobic stages that test reflexes more than logic.
While the mechanics are derivative, there is a surprising amount of content packed into the cartridge, including boss encounters and varied stage themes that attempt to push the Mega Drive's color palette.
