Developed by Probe Software, the game puts players in the shoes of Kyle Reese as he navigates a post-apocalyptic 2029 before traveling back to Los Angeles to protect Sarah Connor. The 8-bit hardware is pushed to its limits to recreate the film's gritty, industrial atmosphere, utilizing a dark color palette and recognizable locales that instantly ground the player in the cinematic universe.
Gameplay consists of high-stakes platforming and run-and-gun combat, though the difficulty is notoriously steep. From the relentless assault of Terminators in the future levels to the maze-like corridors of the police station, the game demands precision and memorization. Kyle Reese feels appropriately vulnerable, and the scarcity of health power-ups adds a layer of tension that mirrors the "hunted" feeling of the source material. However, the game is exceptionally brief, consisting of only a handful of levels that can be finished in under twenty minutes once the patterns are mastered.
