Sega’s 8-bit conversion of *Alien Storm* is an ambitious attempt to shrink a high-octane arcade experience into a humble cartridge. While the hardware limitations are immediately apparent compared to its Mega Drive sibling, the core identity of the "Alien Busters" remains intact. Players take control of either Karen or Garth as they traverse urban landscapes infested with grotesque, shape-shifting extraterrestrials that jump out of everything from trash cans to postboxes.
The gameplay loop is surprisingly varied for a Master System title, alternating between traditional side-scrolling brawling and intense first-person shooting galleries. The combat feels weighty, though the character movement is somewhat sluggish and the collision detection can be finicky when the screen gets crowded. The inclusion of the "Special Attack"—a screen-clearing explosion of fire or electricity—is a visual highlight that pushes the Master System’s palette to its limits, providing a much-needed reprieve when the alien swarms become overwhelming.
Visually, the sprites are large and detailed, capturing the "gross-out" aesthetic of the original arcade designs, though the animation frames are understandably sparse. The music is a faithful, if slightly tinny, rendition of the classic soundtrack that keeps the energy high despite the inevitable sprite flickering during heavy action. It is a brief experience, and the omission of the robot character Scooter is a disappointment for fans of the trio, but as a technical showcase for Sega’s 8-bit machine, it stands as a solid, albeit condensed, port.
