Based on the cult classic manga, *Ushio to Tora* for the Super Famicom is a dark, atmospheric action-brawler that captures the supernatural tension of the source material remarkably well. Players take control of Ushio Aotsuki, armed with the legendary Beast Spear, and his reluctant yokai companion, Tora, as they battle hordes of ancient demons across a series of side-scrolling stages. Unlike many licensed titles of the era that felt like rushed cash-ins, developer Yutaka managed to instill a sense of weight and urgency into the combat, making every encounter with the grotesque "monsters of the week" feel like a legitimate struggle for survival.
The gameplay shines through its character-switching mechanic, allowing players to toggle between Ushio’s rapid, long-range spear strikes and Tora’s raw, elemental power. The sprites are impressively large for the hardware, and the boss encounters are the true highlights, often filling the screen with multi-jointed designs that push the console’s sprite limits. While the platforming can occasionally feel stiff and the hit detection is sometimes unforgiving, the combat loop remains satisfying, especially when utilizing Tora’s lightning and fire-breathing abilities to clear the screen of lesser spirits during the more frantic segments.
Despite its visual flair and faithful adaptation of the anime's aesthetic, the game suffers from a sharp difficulty spike and somewhat repetitive level design that may alienate casual players. It lacks the refined, rhythmic flow found in the elite brawlers from Capcom or Konami, yet it remains a fascinating hidden gem for fans of 90s supernatural horror.
